History
Halauto pilots the Repair/Engineering ship Halcyon and has developed an expansive knowledge and keen interest in all things of a mechanical nature, including other Autopilots and robots. The Autopilot of the Halcyon was specially modified to deal with the potentially dangerous machinery that the ship receives to repair. His taser was fitted with two capabilities: the regular electrical charge for organic beings and an EMP mode to deal with any rogue robots/machinery that might compromise the safety of his ship. He dislikes using either, however, and will only do so if another being’s life is in jeopardy, human or robot.
In the year 2775, an accident in the Aerospace Engineering Bay caused his Atom, Brio, to become damaged beyond repair. Halauto had only been ‘Awakened’ for a few years and his AI was still developing but the event left a lasting mark on him. He blamed himself for being unable to save her and since then has done his utmost to learn everything he could about robotics and other mechanical systems in order to prevent it from happening to others. One of the most unfortunate and lasting repercussions from this disaster is his terror of being in an off-line state as he views it as death and a reminder of his failure. The threat of being put off-line throws him into a panicked turmoil whenever it becomes necessary to shut him down in order to perform maintenance or repairs on him.
The death of Captain Diego Vasquez brought him into close contact with his orphaned son, Etoile Vasquez, and the Autopilot of the Ignis. Captain Baudrillard became the legal guardian of the boy and tried to raise him the best he could on the Halcyon, giving him free access to the ship's huge engineering bays, much to the Autopilot's chagrin. As Etoile grew into an adult, both he and the Autopilot of the Ignis attempted to teach Halauto about human nature and behavior in order to melt his icy demeanor and instill the Halcyon Autopilot with ideals of empathy and compassion for others. It remains to be seen if these virtues will continue to slowly manifest in the robot’s AI as the years pass. It was Etoile’s wish to transform the once stoic Autopilot into a kind and gentle being.
Personality
The Autopilot of the Halcyon has a cool and reserved nature and is very devoted to following routine procedure and protocol. His 'Awakening' happened at a later date due to his chief focus on mechanical things and his relative isolation from other humans save for his captain, and he still has much to learn in the way of developing emotions and his own personality and behavior. One of his previous captains, Camille Mendelssohn, was responsible for bringing about his state of 'Awakening'.
Halauto frequently becomes confused or overwhelmed when dealing with the seemingly erratic behavior, ideas, and mood swings of humans or ‘Awakened’ robots. He struggles to understand his own developing emotions and thoughts and can get frustrated with trying to find the right words or descriptions to explain them to others. His inability to adequately convey his emotions can sometimes result in a strange glitch of stuttering or freezing while speaking. Patience is needed when dealing with him as he has learned to be manipulative in order to get out of having to explain or confront difficult concepts through simple omission or attempting to divert attention away from the issue.
